Paypal Stinks!

1--I recently tried to rejoin Paypal to buy something--but I was turned down--because my credit card number changed--
my conclusion: dumb outfit--I wound up sending cash to the seller ($12)

2--In my spam folder I've just found this--I'm afraid that it's a virus--I' m afraid to write back and say this sale is fraudulent--

Letter to the Editor

In Praise of Two Ladies

Kudos to the “two ladies” who began waving Israeli flags in the midst of an anti-Israeli demonstration group on the Village Green! About time people stood up for Israel against ignorant and biased anti-semites.
The person who wrote about these two heroines, Bill Campion, says “there’s no doubt” that if Palestinians did that in Israel they would have been jailed or their houses bulldozed. Actually, everyone in Israel, Arabs included, has the right of free speech; and the only houses the Israelis are bulldozing are those where terrorist/murderers lived (or the houses of Jews in settlements on disputed land). The Greeks had a word for Bill Campion: shmuck.
In a really weird, incoherent letter, full of rants about “Zionists,” Phil Sullivan writes: If former congresswoman Cynthia McKinney says something, he accepts it as true.
Actually, McKinney must have crawled out from under a rock. She claimed that George W. Bush knew about 9/11 before it happened—but did nothing so that his father could make a lot of money in the stocks of defense companies! She claimed that Al Gore’s “Negro tolerance level has never been too high.” (He actually had a black campaign manager.) She has repeatedly made anti-semitic remarks. No wonder Phil Sullivan admires her!
She puts me in mind of another contemptible politician: Mississippi Governor (and later Senator) Theodore Bilbo (1877-1947), a proud member of the Ku Klux Klan. He called Clare Booth Luce a “nigger lover,” praised Hitler again and again, and said that whites “were justified in going to any extreme to keep the nigger from voting.” He blocked anti-lynching legislation, declaring, memorably, “If you succeed in the passage of this bill, you will open the floodgates of hell in the South. Raping, mobbing, lynching, race riots, and crime will be increased a thousand-fold; and upon your garments and the garments of those who are responsible for the passage of the measure will be the blood of the raped and outraged daughters of Dixie, as well as the blood of the perpetrators of these crimes that the red-blooded Anglo-Saxon White Southern men will not tolerate.”
One has to reach back to Theodore Bilbo to find another American politician as loathsome as Cynthia McKinney.

Some Women Are Horrors

Carol is married to an old friend of mine.
We used to play bridge together--she and her husband, me, and a friend of mine.
Then I discovered that Carol was cheating. When she was my partner, she would deliberately lose--so her husband would win!
When I mentioned my suspicion to my partner, she said, Carol ALWAYS does that.

So I stopped playing bridge with them. And my friendship with Carol's husband ended.

***

I was in Nyack, in a bookstore with an old friend of mine, Suzanne.

Carol came in.

Why are you in Nyack? she asked.

I explained: Suzanne lives in Chappaqua, I live in Hackensack, and this is equidistant. So we meet here occasionally.

Bt she kept demanding an explanation.

Later I figured out that she was loudly implying that this was an assignation.

What a horror she is.

Mr. Dooley on Why Jews Are in Business

Writing in the Boston Globe (Nov.16, 1902), Finley Peter Dunne (1867-1936) considered the question of Jews, money, and business -- writing as the Irishman, Mr. Dooley.

'Tis ye'er idee that ivry Jew is a rich man. Maybe e're right. Maybe all thim Jews that lives down in Canal sthreet, twinty in a room, is Rothschilds....

Th' reason th' Jews is all in business is because they'se nawthin' else f'r them to do....

They cudden't be sojers or pollyticians or lawyers or judges. But they'se wan pursoot where prejudice has no hand. Whin a man wants to borrow money he niver inquires about th' charackter or religion iv th' fellow he touches. ... and not paying money back to a Jew is Christyan varchue....

I.F. Stone

New bio of him--I met him once, in Ralph Ginzburg's office--
I said that US pro-Russia people in the 1930s should have abandoned Russia when it signed a non-aggression pact with Germany--as I recall, he disagreed--perhaps he said that they could have justifiably continued siding with Russia--very pleasant, lively person--
